The Mezuzah and the Commandments

First, I am not a prophet, Yahweh rarely speaks to me (or I rarely listen). I just read the scriptures and try and follow them to the best I know how. Most of the time the law is very clear on the issues, but sometimes minor details are not clear and can be given different interpretations. Sometimes I have to come to my own conclusions. For instance, the Jews put a Mezuzah, which is a case containing a few verses of the Torah in it on their door post (When I went to Israel, I was told from a person selling them that the scroll had some verses in the Torah, I later found out from a Rabbi that the verses are: Deuteronomy 6:4-9, 11:13-21. Since the verses that I saw were in Hebrew, I will just have to take their word for it). They believe that they are in compliance with YHWH's law of putting the commandments on your door post (Deuteronomy 6:4-9). I read those same verses and ask myself, "Why does YHWH want them on our door posts?" I concluded that He might want them there so we will know them, and others can see them as they enter my house. Therefore, I have a small 10 Commandment sign on my door post that is big enough for everyone entering my house to notice and read. And when I fence my property, I am going to put a big 10 Commandment sign out on my gate that can be seen by traffic that goes up and down my street.

In my opinion a scroll rolled up (even if it did have words that you could read) and kept in a case does not serve YHWH's purpose. But I am not going to say that the Jews are wrong in their interpretation (maybe they are right and I am wrong). Either way, I don't think YHWH will punish anyone for trying to follow His law to the best of their ability. He might slap them on the head and say "I gave you a brain, you should have used it. I told you about following man's traditions. Read the scriptures, pray about it, and let My Spirit guide you.", but I don't think He will charge them (or me) for breaking this law in this case.

Deuteronomy 5:7-21
7Thou shalt have none other gods before me.

8Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:

9Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me,

10And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.

11Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

12Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee.

13Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work:

14But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.

15And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.

16Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

17Thou shalt not kill.

18Neither shalt thou commit adultery.

19Neither shalt thou steal.

20Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.

21Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour's.

Deuteronomy 6:9
And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
