There are three tithes mentioned in the bible. Each tithe is 10% of your increase. The First tithe went to the Levite Priests (Numbers 18, Nehemiah 10). They ran the temple, the police, judged cases, and punished criminals (sinners). The second tithe was for the people to save for the feast of Tabernacles. It was travel money and feast money to spend on what ever their heart desired (Deuteronomy 12:22-27). The third tithe (Deuteronomy 14:28-29) was only done every 3 years of a 7-year cycle. For instance:
1st year: no
2nd year: no
3rd year: third tithe
4th year: no
5th year: no
6th year: third tithe
7th year: year of release --all debts are forgiven (except of foreigners)
Then it starts over
The third tithe went to the Levite, the stranger, the orphans, and widows.
(I always hear preachers saying that we should still tithe....but I never hear about the third tithe)
